Mac OS X Tip of the Day

If you're like me you suck at creating new passwords, which is why I've now come to rely on password generators. There are several websites and apps that will create strong random passwords for you, but if you don't want to install an app just for password creation open up a Terminal window
(go to Applications > Utilities > Terminal)
and type

openssl rand -base64 6

then hit enter. The Terminal will use this command to create a completely random 8 digit password for you.

To upgrade or not to upgrade

iPod Touch 2.0 is out, and the Dev-Team appears to have hacked it already. A jailbreak tool should be out soon. It's all very exciting, and we're all poised for the release. But...there should we be? We're not sure if our current Installer/Cydia apps will work on our jailbroken 2.0s. Some are certain they won't, and no one's equally sure they will. And sure, there's a lot of overlap between the Installer/Cydia apps and the Apple Appstore apps, but the overlap isn't nearly complete. As yet, I see no replacements for great apps like weDict, WiFi Toggle, AgileMessenger (or any IM client, really), Convert (or Converter), Lexitron, PocketTouch, TouchPad Pro, etc.

Having Fun With MobileMe Emails.

MobileMe is slowly replacing .Mac, and all new and current subscribers will get new "@me.com" email address.

As always, this begs for some serious creativity (or not) to get some silly email addresses.

I've tried them and they're taken:

Go make your own.....

Why iPhone and Macs Don’t Sync Notes

So the hype of the iPhone 3G seems to be dying down ever so slowly, although no one has made the comment that you still can't sync notes. Even though both the iPhone and Macs have the ability to create notes, you can't keep your note databases in sync.

To many, this seems like something totally un-Apple: to make two identical features on both platforms, yet not allow for syncing between the two (especially when you consider that everything else syncs perfectly). Obviously, there’s something else going on behind the scenes (similar to the Time Machine backups via Airport fiasco, which was given a technical explanation and subsequently fixed by Apple).

iPod Touch 2.0 - It's Here

When the iPhone was launched, plenty of people praised how revolutionary the device was (and still is), but most lamented the lack of an official SDK, or provision to install apps. Users and developers were instead told that the best apps for this new, revolutionary device were going to be found on the internet. Most people took this news surprisingly well, but a small group of users decided to work on something better.
