Roku to Stream Other Video

Roku, the maker of the $99 Netflix streaming set-top box, has told Forbes that it will be updating its software later this year to let the device stream video from other "big name" providers.

While Roku didn't name names, YouTube obviously springs to mind. The video-sharing site has done deals to get its content on devices like the Apple TV, HP MediaSmart Connect, and Sony and Panasonic TVs.  read more »

Sales of Apple laptops soar by 61%!

DisplaySearch, an online market research firm, reports that Apple’s sales of laptops are up 61% from the first quarter of 2007 to the first quarter of 2008.

Over that period, Apple has shipped over 1.4 million notebooks, compared to almost 900,000 the previous year. This means Apple lies just behind Asus in terms of growth from year-to-year, as the Taiwanese company saw a slightly higher 67% growth rate. Most other notebook manufacturers saw growth rates in the 20 - 40% range.  read more »

Two Cynical Poems

“The iPod” and “Exotica”

1.
I must confess, Franz Kafka,
that I’ve never read your books,

I once saw a
made-for-TV movie
of The Trial.

It was snowing outside,
and nothing was on.

I was thinking about
how much I like
the sensation of undressing.

Before the snow,
And things that blind us,
we turn the wheel
so many degrees.

Being long dead,
You may not understand this.
This is the iPod.

Listen to it closely.

It’s a European knowledge of clockwork.
It’s a Zen-styled American milkman.

a smooth menu of everything;
castrati singers,
on early sound.  read more »

Diablo 3 Update that I missed (sorry)

Since the initial showing, Blizzard has confirmed that Diablo III is being developed for PC and Mac only "for now," with the aim being for it to run on a broad set of systems rather than just high-end hardware. When asked for a release window, all anyone from Blizzard is willing to say is simply: "When it's ready." Diablo III has been in development for about four years, and now has a team of 50-55 developers dedicated to it, according to Jay Wilson, the game's lead designer. The game will offer drop-in/drop-out co-op play over Battle.net throughout; though it will be doable as a solo player, gamers will be able to bring friends in at any stage. Although the game is obviously not yet rated, Blizzard confirmed to GameSpot that it plans to stay true to the series' M-rated roots.  read more »

APPLE monitor woes!

So I get off the phone with a client — usually on my headset, pacing back in forth in my GAROFFICE (office in a garage) — and I hang up, sit down... and BLAM!

My 20" Apple Cinema Display has this gradient blackness. Oh... I can still see my icons on my desktop... but it's grayish at the top, fading down to the bottom. And that little light on the right side (uno... the one you magically wave your finger over, your computer starts up, and the coffee machine makes a cup-o-joe?)... yeah... that one. It's blinking 3 times... then off for like 7-8 seconds... then blinking 3 times... then off again (etc).  read more »
