I love the gym. I wasn't one of the kids in high school who made it on the tennis or volleyball team (didn't stop me from trying out, several times). I have natural athletic ability, but never really cared enough to train or perfect my skills enough to be better than other people trying out. Also, I'm only 5'1" (not good for spiking a volleyball). So I threw myself into writing and things that didn't require making the team, but just signing up for the class. I excelled in yearbook (I was editor in chief senior year and won a journalism scholarship to college) and English classes all throughout high school. When I came to college, I quickly became more active. Living in D.C. without a car leads to a lot of walking and a lot dodging traffic. I received an iPod about a year after they came out and quickly learned that certain songs are great for walking. Whenever "Crazy Eights" by Tapes 'n Tapes came on, I noticed myself walking much faster than normal. Now that I go to the gym regularly (although I'm sidelined this week due to a health issue), I notice myself uncontrollably working out much faster to certain songs. Sometimes I'll try to control it if I'm going too fast, but I always wind up going much faster than my normal pace (180 strides per minute on the elliptical, my average is usually 160 s/m). I absolutely love my workout playlist. For some reason, my gym doesn't have great muzak for my fellow exercisers and I to listen to. Here's an example of what I listen to at the gym that helps me get my workout, and my heart rate, going: 01. Almost Here, The Academy Is...* *those marked with an asterisk are super-duper cardio workout songs, in my opinion |
